As we are all about tea this month with our heart shaped loose leaf teaspoon GIVEAWAY, we are exploring the wonderful world of tea and its origins. It is often thought of as being a quintessentially British drink, and we have been drinking it for over 350 years.

But in fact the history of tea goes much further back.

The story of tea begins in China. According to legend, in 2737 BC, the Chinese emperor Shen Nung was sitting beneath a tree while his servant boiled drinking water, when some leaves from the tree blew into the water. Shen Nung, a renowned herbalist, decided to try the infusion that his servant had accidentally created.

The tree was a Camellia Sinensis and the resulting drink was what we now call tea.

Now here comes the tricky part, how to make that ‘perfect cup of tea’? How about following these simple steps:

Measure out a cup of water and a teaspoon of tea for each person, with one for the pot if you like it strong.

Pour the water from the freshly boiled kettle into the teacup first and then into the teapot – this way the proportions will be perfect – once the tea is brewed all the liquid is poured out so the leaves won't stew and will be in perfect condition for a second or third infusion. It will also cool the water to the right temperature – for proper tea, an ideal temperature is around 85C.

Remember, leaf teas need a little longer to infuse than teabags. Teabags give up their paltry flavour in an instant. A tealeaf has so much more to offer and takes its time.

Next it’s a question of milk in first or second. As it happens its totally up to you as there is no right or wrong way, it all boils down to purely personal choice!

Of course the final step is making sure you have one of our beautiful fine bone china mugs to enjoy it in or alternatively if you want to make it extra special why don’t you enjoy it in our teacup & saucer set. Don’t forget our dainty milk jugs are the perfect accompaniment too!

Now all that is left is for you to put your feet up and enjoy your perfect cuppa!
